SOURCES

The sources for this work are many and varied and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who gave and are still giving their time, to help in the research. These pages are updated with whatever information comes to hand, and all information is gratefully received.

In studying these pages, it should be remembered that no information is 'carved in granite'. In odd cases even the cross referenced entries in the same reference book have given different dates, and in the time period researched, several things conspire to make verification difficult. Lack of records, lack of requirement to keep records or the later loss of them, the tendency to 'sweep under the carpet', anything of which the family might be ashamed, lack of literacy leading to many spelling variations, the re-use of many names within a family, sometimes within siblings, particularly where one (or more) has died, and human error. I have endeavoured to show up and explain any discrepancies I have found in an effort to provide options for those following in my footsteps.

HUGH CRAWFORD

Much of the basic framework for the Crawford family tree was constructed by Mr Hugh CRAWFORD, who wrote his family history and made several visits to the Crawford Gallery in Cork in the late 1980s. He donated his work to the gallery, along with some silhouette portraits in Indian Ink on paper of the Crawford family of William I of Lakelands, Cork. These portraits are reproduced on the page of the person they depict who can be accessed from Tree 1a

I have gathered together further information from a variety of sources and added family trees of some related families.

A printed copy of these pages is available to view at the Gallery, along with the original miniatures and much more information and artefacts of the Crawford family.

With thanks for all their help ..
