WILLSON Arminella
Born circa 1750 Died ____

Arminella, daughter of Hill WILLSON of Purdysburn Co Down (Hill Willson died circa 1773), married William Sharman of Moira Castle. It is known that William died in 1803.

Legatees under her Will were :

James Willson MP for Co Antrim (Brother)
John Hill Sharman (Son)
Rev Andrew Craig (Brother-in-law)
Jane McCully
Mabel F. Sharman née Crawford (Daughter-in_law)
Eleanor Willson née Sharman (Daughter)
Margaret Craig née Willson (Sister)

Nothing else is known about Arminella except that her family were reputed to be large landowners, who built both the St Helens Bay and Carnlea Golf Courses, and it was their name which now graces golf balls and other accessories.

(Please note that the above is unconfirmed)

NB: The name Arminella is rare except amongst a group of families which descend from the COSLETTs, HADDOCKs and WILLSONs of Purdysburn, Co Down.

It reappears later in

1. Arminella SHARMAN-CRAWFORD b1818, (this being Arminella's granddaughter by her son William SHARMAN-CRAWFORD and Mabel Fridiswid CRAWFORD of Crawfordsburn)

and also in

2. Arminella WILSON of Ballycastle, b 21st April 1793 in Maryland U.S.A. (who married the Rev William CRAWFORD of Glencairn and Broughshane, who was son of Hugh CRAWFORD of Orangefield). This Arminella's parents were Stephen Wilson and Rebecca Nelson who were married 13th Feb 1786 At the First Presbyterian Church, Baltimore, Maryland. Because of the rarity of the name it is possible that either or both of her parents were of Irish descent, one of them possibly related to the WILLSONs of Purdysburn, co Down.

I have received information about Arminella Wilson from Nancy Overton and our discussions and document copies on the matter are in Arminella Wilson in .pdf form.
